This
weekend the Pirates weathered yet another day of winter weather,
despite snow, heavy rains and winds leading up the event Ride #3 took
place. In fact with substantial snow falling in Hoopa a day before the
ride, plans had been issued to cancel the event and reschedule. Yet as
Saturday morning arrived a dozen hungry pirates were anxious to ride
regardless of the conditions, so ride #3 went down. The crew did have
a brief push through fresh snow to the top of the Rubber Duck DH, where
riders slid through snow the first 200 feet of trail. Once clear of
the snow the trail was hooking surprisingly well, Hoopa once again
prooving it is by far the best mud season DH in northern Cali.
Due
to the cold and slippery shuttle the event was concise, two practice
runs and one timed heat. Confusion and interpretation abounded on the
Rubber Duck as no course marking had been done, leaving participants
numerous options ranging from straight and steep to off camber and
convoluted. Therefore times were not as telling as they could have
been. Hoopa local Shane Oneil pieced together the quickest line as
witnessed by his astounding 49 second lead over second place finisher
Justin Graves. Brian Hapgood and Ryan Delong posted competitive times
as well, opting for the slighty longer trail combo ridden by Graves,
Hapgood placing 3rd and Delong taking third despite running off course
within sight of the finish, dismounting and confusedly walking back
onto the course.
All
things said the ride was a blast, the new trail is really beginning to
shine thanks to the hard work of everyones mud tires, and we are
looking forward to holding a fair weather event there very soon.
Thanks again to the Hoopa Tribe and Tribal council for making these
events possible as well as Amos Pole, Shane Oneil, Ryan Delong, Robert
Rhall Jr., Rob Rhall Sr., and nic Lumas for all their hard work on the
new Trail.
