Homework Over Winter Break: That's right in these darkest of months, whilst the trails art saturated thou shalt study the ways of thy masters.

Times they are a changing and from here on out there is going to be more DH media coverage available online then any one mind can asorb.  So while the bikes are hanging take this chance to catch up on a historical season of Gravity MTB racing.  You tube is saturated with Sam Hill clips, and replays of all the pertinent Freecaster race coverage.  To boot videographer Clay Porter was once again assigned to document the Yeti Factory team.  Just so happened it was a record year for American Gwin Holmes and Kiwi Sam Blenkinsop.  These two will both be in the headlines throughout '09 so check out the fine video examples of their breakout seasons at the Yeti Website.

 UCI's New Rules Unconstitutional??

Protections in Downhill/4X:
An approved full-face helmet must be worn properly fastened both when racing and when training on the course. The helmet must be fitted with a visor. Open-face helmets may not be worn.

As reported, skinsuits and all other tight clothing is banned..in a speed sport. Genius.

Clothing in Downhill/4X:
All tight-fitting clothing is not permitted

One response "Unfortunately the UCI has felt the need to over regulate the sport once again. This is a speed based sport. Riders race against the clock, they should be able to take every aero advantage they can get, no matter how silly some people feel it looks.

You can bet that national federations will be protesting this on the cost factor alone. Most federations do 1 uniform. It is worn by everyone from the Road and pursuit teams through XC and DH. Now they need to do at least a BMX jersey, as even a long sleeve XC jersey will not pass the test, and many countries require long sleeves for downhill competitions."

I'm not sure if this is a victory for those protesting weasel squezzers or if it is in fact a detrimental blow to the sport.  At least no one will be risking eye damage without their visor this year.

Sam Blenkinsop (Yeti), has won his first World Cup on a very muddy and demanding Schladming track in Austria!  The young second season elite dominated both the semi final and final rounds, besting course favorite Sam Hill by over a second and beating the rest of the world's best at the same time.  In domestic news, new comer Gwin Aaron Holmes (Yeti) backed up his impressive Mt. Saint Anne finish from earlier this season with an 8th place today giving him two top ten finishes this season, something no American has done for many years.

Matt Cipes Rides  Matt Cipes of Chico brought the pain in more ways than one at the Red Tail Hawk DH Pirate Ride in December. Cipes won the race but had to leave on a back board.  Here's a little update from the god of thunder...
"I just wanted to update you guys on my condition. After a CT scan and several X-rays it was determined that I fractured both my tail bone (ramus) and my pelvic ring, as well as separating the pelvic ring from the tail bone on both the left and right side. Now I have two hollow stainless steel bolt and a plate holding me together. I spent about two months on a wheel chair and a couple weeks on crutches. It was a long journey but I am finally back on the bike and loving every second. Thanks for putting on kick ass races, when I get well enough I'll come back for some more victories and good times!

SOMEWHERE, IN SOMEONE'S BACKYARD, OR MAYBE DOWN AT THE SKATE PARK, AS YOU READ THIS, some big grown-up man is launching his armored body through the air on a nifty bundle of rubber and spokes and then thudding victoriously to the hard, hard ground. Maybe he'll swoop the bicycle around for another go at that jump, that downhill high-speed heart-drop or those courthouse steps and banisters...
